The Lumix S5II is a phenomenal camera! Today, I’m going to talk about the reasons why I left Canon and switched back to Panasonic with the Lumix S5II. Before we get into the reasons why I switched back, let me tell you a little bit of history in terms of the cameras that I’ve used.
My Camera Journey
When I first started shooting, I started off with Nikon, then I switched over to Sony, then I switched over to Panasonic, and then I went over to Canon. So I bounced around to almost every camera brand that you can think of, but I don’t think I ever shot Fuji, that’s the only one that I didn’t get my hands on.
In that season, I was just trying different camera brands just to see what I liked and what I didn’t like. Once I got the feel for all the different brands, I really liked the images that I was getting out of my Panasonic cameras. My Lumix camera was awesome for photography, but as I started to really dive into more video, I noticed that the lack of good autofocus really just made it hard to be able to shoot the way that I wanted to shoot.
The main reasons why I switched over and stayed with Canon for a while, were the Canon colors and the Dual pixel autofocus. The Canon autofocus is just so Rock Solid. It was hard to resist the quality of use that Canon provided for both photo and video. Leaving Lumix was kind of hard, because in my heart I always loved Panasonic and had a great time with my Lumix camera. I just needed better autofocus than what they were providing.
Lumix S5II Brought me Back to Panasonic
Once I switched to Canon, I never really looked back to Panasonic for video anymore. The S5 and the S1 just didn’t have good enough autofocus for me to consistently trust, but once they released the Lumix S5II, it was a total game changer for me! The Lumix S5II fixed the most glaring issue for me with the Panasonic cameras, autofocus!
Lumix S5II Phase Detect Autofocus Quality
The phase detect autofocus system that they put into this thing is absolutely Rock Solid! I’ve shot several events with this camera and I absolutely love it. I was just shooting a wedding show here a few weekends ago and once it caught onto the subject, it stayed on the subject.
When it comes to the Lumix S5II, there are a lot of great features that stand out. One of the things that really impressed me was the smoothness of the transition from subject to subject. Unlike some other cameras I’ve used, which can have a jarring transition when switching from one subject to another, the S5II has a really smooth drop-off. This makes for beautiful looking footage and seamless transitions from subject to subject.
Canon Limitations
Another reason I decided to make the switch was because of the limitations I faced when shooting video with Canon. While their cameras are great for photography, they often cut back on features for video. For example, many Canon cameras have recording limits or overheat when shooting video. Even with the R3, which was one of the few Canon cameras that didn’t overheat, I still had to pay a premium to get the features I needed for hybrid shooting. On the other hand, the Lumix S5II has all the premium features I need for both photo and video, without any compromises. It gives you the full package for both photo and video without cutting corners in quality!
In addition to fixing their autofocus issues and offering more video features, Lumix also has a more affordable pricing model than Canon. While Canon is a great brand, you always pay a premium to use their equipment, whether it’s lenses, bodies, or accessories. In contrast, Lumix offers a more cost-effective solution that doesn’t compromise on quality.
All in all, I am really happy with my decision to switch to the Lumix S5II. The autofocus is excellent, the video features are comprehensive, and the pricing is more reasonable than Canon. If you’re a hybrid shooter like me, or if you just want a camera that can handle both photo and video well, I highly recommend giving the Lumix S5II a try.
