Instagram Threads is the new app on the block. In a pool full of social media apps, the Threads app is the new addition to the pile. Threads allows you to share text updates without having to post images/videos like IG. It’s basically Twitter, brought to you by Instagram.
Instagram Threads is created to take instagram and place it in the same sphere as Twitter. With the text first approach, Threads is created to compete with the constant stream of conversations that occur on Twitter. Instagram has worked hard to make it simple for users to dive into the Threads app. Users can just login with their Instagram account and that verification will carry over to the new app.
Your feed on Threads will automatically feature threads posted by people you follow on Instagram. The connection between your Instagram account and Threads keeps the transition pain free. On the new app, text posts can be up to 500 characters long and also include links, photos, and videos up to 5 minutes long. You can also share posts from your Threads account to your Instagram story, or share your post as a link.
The Threads app itself, isn’t a completely new concept to the company formerly known as Facebook. Meta initially introduced the Threads app back in 2019. It was created for users to message people in their Instagram close friends list. This space allowed you to message these close friends, share status updates and other media in a private group. It was basically a narrow version of Messenger.
That version of Threads appears to have been scrapped in favor of the current iteration that’s just been released. It seems like Meta has decided to take its best shot at bringing down the 120 character king of conversation. There was a lot of buzz recently about the release of Instagram Threads. Many viewed it as a final blow to Twitter, but Elon and the blue bird have come back with a very interesting counter punch.
Twitter Monetization Counter Punch
In what looks like a quick counter punch to Instagram, Twitter recently began paying content creators a share of the ad revenue from the replies to their posts. In order for a creator to be eligible for this payment, they need to be subscribed to Twitter Blue and have more than 5 million monthly tweet impressions for the last 3 months.
Based on reports from the earliest payout recipients, these payments are expected to be very substantial. Some creators reported getting notifications for $24,305, some for $7,153 and others for a bit less than that. Nobody truly knows how these payouts are calculated, but it seems like the profit potential is significant.
This new line of monetization now makes it a bit more challenging for Threads to siphon users away from the blue bird. With content creators now being paid handsomely by Twitter, why would they make the jump to a brand new app. It’ll be a very interesting match up to keep an eye on moving forward. Both Twitter and Threads have their own perks, but at this point it’s hard to say if Instagram’s new toy will overtake Twitter.
With all of it’s flaws and financial issues currently, Twitter still has a very strong base of loyal users. With multiple avenues of content monetization now in play, there’s a lot more work to be done by Meta in order to be a true Twitter rival.
