Does Sora from OpenAi signal the end of videography as we know it? Not necessarily, but it does change a lot about the creative video world. So what is Sora? Sora is an AI model that can create realistic and imaginative scenes from text instructions. OpenAi is teaching Ai how to understand and simulate the world in motion. The Sora model can create videos up to 1 minute long and maitain the requested quality from the user.
According to OpenAi, Sora is able to generate complex scenes with multiple characters, specific motions, and accurate details. The model understands not only what the user asks for in the prompt, but also how those things exist in the physical world. This is an amazing, game changing tool that is definitely going to make some waves in the world of videography.
After seeing some of the videos that were created by Sora, I was completely blown away! It took me a while to wrap my mind around the fact that the videos were Ai generated. In the video example below, the clip looks like something a videographer shot. The only point where the cover is blown, is when there’s a little bit of an unnatural shift about a quarter of the way in. You can see the lady slide like a videogame character instead of walking normally.
Here’s another example where the prompt given was, “A movie trailer featuring the adventures of the 30 year old space man wearing a red wool knitted motorcycle helmet, blue sky, salt desert, cinematic style, shot on 35mm film, vivid colors.” It’s so impressive how good this movie trailer looks. The colors look great and the character is just as described in the text prompt. This all was done via a text prompt!
So is Videography Dead?
As impressive as Sora is, I don’t believe it signals the end of videography as we know it. No matter how awesome Sora is, it’s not live. It won’t be able to capture realtime events such as weddings, live events, etc. There will still be a use for videography, but Sora does introduce a new element into the stock videography world.
As things continue to move forward with the development of Sora, I can see it mainly having a major impact on the stock videography side of things. Stock videography thrived on being able to provide crucial B-roll when necessary. With Sora, the B-roll footage that would have been bought on stock sites, can now be created with a text prompt!
Check out this generated clip of Big Sur. This would have cost a pretty penny on a stock site, now Ai can bring it right to your lap.
Videography isn’t dead, but this technology sends a strong message on what’s to come. As Sora improves and other Ai models start to develop, who knows what the future will hold. The times are changing, hopefully you’re keeping up!
